How to cool your dog in summer?

During the summer months, when temperatures rise, it is important to take extra care of our pets. Some breeds, such as the Bulldog, Pug, and Shih Tzu, are more susceptible to heat stroke, due to their shorter noses, which can prevent proper cooling through breathing. High temperatures can be dangerous, which is why extra precautions are essential.

In this article, we will present you with some tips on how to maintain your pet’s water balance, what diet to choose, what activity is suitable in the summer season and how to recognize if your friend is dehydrated or has had a heat stroke. And in the end, you will find out how you can get a gift – a portable 2 in 1 bottle.

If you follow these recommendations, your dog/kitten will feel happy and relaxed all summer long.

Hydration is key

It is a well-known fact that water is crucial for the survival of all living beings. It is 70-80% of our body and is the main component of all healthy cells. Our four-legged friends can last up to a week without food and only about 3 days without water. The water that is excreted from the body through urination, breathing, feces or sweating must be equalized by its intake, which is a delicate balance, especially since our pets cannot replenish their water reserves as quickly as humans.

Keep your dog/kitten well hydrated at all times to prevent any health problems that may occur due to dehydration.

Always provide fresh water to your pet. Sometimes this is not an easy task, but we offer you a simple solution – a multifunctional water bottle. It is portable, lightweight and comfortable, suitable for outdoor activities and transforms into a bowl in seconds. With it, you can be sure that your friend will not remain dehydrated.

How much water does your dog need?

Daily water intake varies depending on activity, nutrition and temperature. Dogs need approximately 30 ml for every kilogram of weight. If your friend weighs 20 kilograms, he will need at least 0.6 liters of water daily. When temperatures are higher, this amount is likely to increase. With increased activity combined with high temperatures, the need for hydration can sometimes reach up to 150 ml per kg of body weight. This means that a 20-kilogram dog should take 3 liters of water a day. When our pets are fed using the BARF method, they are additionally hydrated. In this case, their daily intake of drinking water is reduced to 10 ml per kg of body weight. This need increases from 5 to 8 times with dry food. This is the reason why most kibble is unsuitable, especially for dogs that are prone to kidney problems or don’t get enough hydration. Kidney disease, diabetes or inflammatory infections can cause unquenchable thirst. Drinking a large amount of water quickly can lead to additional problems. The blood is diluted more and the body cannot maintain the natural pressure in the metabolism. This leads to a collapse of the circulatory system and the loss of many minerals under certain circumstances. If you notice that your dog/kitten is drinking much more or much less water than normal, consult a veterinarian.

Choose a hydrating diet

Unlike most commercial foods that are low in moisture, the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet can provide extra hydration for your pet. With its higher water content, it is a great choice both during the hot summer months and throughout the year. Natural raw food provides all the necessary nutrients, vitamins, minerals.

Limit outdoor activities

On hot days, limit outdoor activities and provide your dog with a shady and well-ventilated area at home. Walk your friend early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Avoid hot flooring, as it can burn his paws. Use our “Healthy Paw” ointment to protect and protect your four-legged friend.

Dangers on hot days

Dehydration and heat stroke are related, but they are different conditions that can occur due to exposure to heat and high temperatures, especially in hot weather.

Heat stroke

During hot days, the dog’s body tries to maintain a safe temperature, which puts him at risk of heat stroke. This dangerous condition can lead to dehydration, organ failure and even death. It is important to know what the risks are in order to take timely preventive measures.

Symptoms of heat stroke are excessive panting, salivation, rapid breathing, weakness and vomiting. If you notice any of these signs, it is necessary to take immediate action, as a quick reaction is vital. Immediately move your pet to a shady place, offer him fresh water, cool his body with water and quickly seek veterinary help.

Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, resulting in an insufficient amount of water in the body. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including insufficient water intake, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea. While dehydration can occur in any climate, it occurs more often in hot weather, when the body loses more fluids through sweating to cool down.

In case of water shortage, the body takes “rescue measures” to compensate for this lack. Symptoms of dehydration may include dry mouth, lack of appetite, lethargy, sunken eyes, dark yellow urine, more concentrated stools, dry skin, dry nose. Mild cases of dehydration can usually be treated by increasing fluid intake, while severe cases may require medical attention.

You are now well prepared to provide your pet with a safe and enjoyable summer. Embrace the season together, knowing that you have taken the necessary steps to provide it with coolness, comfort and satisfaction during the hot days. And don’t forget that choosing a hydrating diet like raw, natural food can make a significant contribution to the well-being of your dog/kitten, both during the summer months and throughout the year.
